Internet in Beeld: Verleden, Heden & Toekomst –ISOC NL Lifetime Achievement Award, A Surprise for Nani Jansen Reventlow at OSCAM Book Launch

Last week, we celebrated a memorable conclusion to the recent ISOC NL 25th year anniversary event, Internet in Focus: Past, Present & Future. During her book launch of Radical Justice, held at OSCAM in Amsterdam Zuidoost, ISOC NL Chair Ruben Brave surprised author Nani Jansen Reventlow by presenting her with the ISOC NL Lifetime Achievement Award. OSCAM, a cultural hotspot dedicated to art, fashion, and community connections, provided a fitting and symbolic setting for this recognition, honouring a lawyer and activist whose work is deeply rooted in the fight for equality and freedom in the digital space.

The fact that Nani received this award was met with great enthusiasm by the audience, underscoring the respect and admiration for her contributions. She joins a distinguished group of honorees as one of the six award recipients, alongside Lousewies van der Laan, Marleen Stikker, Valerie Frissen, Olaf Kolkman, and Oscar Kneppers—all trailblazers who have significantly advanced digital rights, internet freedom, and innovation.

In his short speech, Chairman Brave highlighted the unique impact of Nani’s work. As the founder of both the Digital Freedom Fund and Systemic Justice, Nani has been a formidable advocate for digital and human rights. Systemic Justice supports community-led strategic litigation focused on racial, social, and economic justice, furthering Nani’s commitment to building fair and inclusive structures within the digital world. Through her work with these organizations, she has empowered countless organizations across Europe to protect human rights online, leading landmark cases at both the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights and the European Court of Human Rights. Her dedication to freedom of expression and privacy inspires many globally, and her tangible achievements drive meaningful change. The fact that her article “Nani Jansen Reventlow about the State of the Internet” was the most-read piece on our ISOC NL website for two consecutive years (2022 and 2023) underscores the resonance her vision finds within our community.

For more on her new book, Radical Justice, check out the feature in OneWorld. The book is available for purchase through Murrow. The book encourages readers to think critically about justice and the role of technology, a topic that grows more relevant each day.

This award presentation at OSCAM not only celebrates Nani’s achievements but also honours the importance of spaces like OSCAM, which foster connection, dialogue, and empowerment. It was a fitting and unforgettable finale to the ISOC NL event, serving as a powerful reminder of the ongoing commitment to a more just and inclusive internet.

Nani, thank you for all you have done and continue to do!
