Het is je waarschijnlijk niet ontgaan dat Facebook behoorlijk onder vuur is komen vanwege het Cambridge Analytica schandaal. Mark Zuckerberg werd voor Amerikaanse Congres geroepen om verantwoording af te leggen over privacy en het tracken van mensen buiten de Facebook site.
De Mozilla Foundation startte in april een petitie om Zuckerberg ook in Europa verantwoording af te laten leggen voor het Europese Parlement. ‘Facebook is a global company, and the majority of its 2 billion-plus users don’t live in the United States. Facebook can’t just be held accountable in the USA. Europe’s strong new data protection laws will come into force on May 25th. Now is the perfect moment for Mark Zuckerberg to face tough questions from European legislators in the European Parliament and set a global precedent.’
De petitie staat nog steeds online op de site van de Mozilla Foundation maar inmiddels kwam vanuit Brussel vorige week het volgende bericht:
‘Facebook’s CEO has agreed to come to the European Parliament in May to testify before MEPs in the wake of revelations of data mis-use at Cambridge Analytica affecting over 2.7m Facebook users. According to a tweet from Thursday 26 April by Daniel Koster, Spokesperson to the EP’s President Antonio Tajani, Mark Zuckerberg’s team has confirmed the request and the announcement will be made official once the format has been agreed.‘
Nu maar afwachten of de Europese parlementariers wat meer deskundigheid aan de dag leggen dan de Amerikaanse congresleden.
